PCC Volleyball Places Three on All-Conference/All Region
Once again, the PCC Volleyball Team placed three players on the All-Conference/All-Region teams for 2009. Sophomore Kate Trejos was named to the First Team, and Tatiana Gonzalez and Kalie Mader were named to the Second Team.
Kate Trejos, last year’s Freshman of the Year, again dominated the Jayhawk West in kills/set. Ranked #12 in the nation, Trejos had 338 kills in 91 sets for a 3.71 kills/set average. Trejos also led the Beavers with 38 aces and was second on the team with 302 digs for a 3.05 digs/set average.
“Once again it was nice to see three of our players recognized on the All-Region Teams,” said Head Coach Patrick Hall. “Kate struggled early this year with recurring ankle issues, but boy did she finish strong. I think if coaches had voted after the conference tourney instead of before, she probably would have been player of the year. She had 76 kills in the tournament alone.”
Kalie Mader, a setter/right side who played in every Beaver volleyball game for two years, was the second leading hitter for Pratt. Mader finished the season with 210 kills and a 2.16 kills/set average. Mader was just behind Trejos with a .234 hitting percentage.
“I was particularly pleased to see Kalie get recognized this season,” continued Hall, “especially after the work she put in in the off-season. She became our poster child for what effort and determination can do for your college career. Kalie doubled her hitting percentage from a year ago, and it was a rewarding experience working with her as she matured both on and off the court.”
Tatiana Gonzalez, an outside hitter who had to play middle for most of the season, was on the Second Team All Region for the second year in a row. Despite being injured for most of the year, Gonzalez led the team in digs with 313 for a 3.22 digs/set average. She also hammered 161 kills.
“Like Kate, Tati did not have the season she would have liked,” said Hall. “Her early shoulder injury prevented her from playing on the outside where she belonged. We had to play her in the middle to limit her swings, and we didn’t move her outside until the last two weeks of the season. She came through with 51 kills and 93 digs, proving what an outstanding player she is.”
