Late penalty lifts Western Nebraska Community College past Lady Beavers
Great Bend, Kan., -- The Lady Beavers were back in action Saturday to face non-conference opponent Western Nebraska Community College in Great Bend, KS.
As the temperature on the turf spiked to over 117 degrees, the Beavers battled in a very tight, competitive match. The Cougars struck first, connecting a cross to the back post in the 23rd minute, a goal that consequently sidelined GK Donna Nickolay for the remainder of the contest. The Beavers refused to accept potential defeat as they equalized shortly before halftime. Makenzie Weishaar struck the post on a brilliant shot from over 30 yards out. Holly Harrod was able to corral the rebound and slam it into the back of the net.
The second half was full of excitement as the Beaver defense, led by Jasmine Torrente and Madollin Mosteller, held strong only allowing three shots on goal.
"Unfortunately, a controversial penalty kick was awarded in the final minute of play," said Jerrid Schicke, Head Women's Soccer Coach. The resulting strike lifted the Cougars past the Beavers for the final 2-1 score.
"The girls were brilliant today! I am very happy with the effort given today. Regardless of the result, this is the kind of football we need to be playing as we approach our home opener on Tuesday," said Schicke.
The Men's and Women's teams will be playing their first home matches today, September, 4th at the Beaver Pitch, which is located east of the rodeo arena and accessible from the road behind the baseball field.
